Don't Worry, Your Pee Test Records Are Safe With Us!

Student drug testing is already a big intrusion into an aspect of life that should be between young people and parents. But to add insult to injury, there was an incident recently in which a box of confidential student drug testing records -- which included names, social security numbers, and test results -- was left sitting out on a sidewalk in Texas.

An employee of a drug testing firm took the box home and then quit without bringing the box back. The records ended up out on the sidewalk when the person was evicted from their home. (Perhaps quitting was not the best idea after all!)

1) I can't believe there hasn't been a bigger news uproar about this. Not only was it confidential information, but it was confidential information about minors.

2) Do drug testing companies get vetted for security when school districts contract with them? The company was just like, "Yeah, it's not our policy to let records out of the office." Well, duh. But what procedures do they have to make sure records don't wander off?

You can read a short article about the incident here.
